How to Support Someone Struggling with Their Mental Health

We all have moments when life feels overwhelming, but for someone struggling with mental health challenges, these moments can feel like an uphill battle. If someone you care about is having a tough time, you might wonder: How can I help?

The truth is, you don’t need to have all the answers. You just need to show up with kindness, patience, and a willingness to listen. Here’s how you can make a difference:

1. Start the Conversation

Many people struggling with mental health feel isolated, afraid to speak up. A simple “Hey, I’ve noticed you haven’t seemed yourself lately?” can open the door to an important conversation.

2. Listen Without Judging

Sometimes, the best thing you can do is just listen. Let them speak without interrupting, without offering quick fixes, and without minimising their feelings.

Avoid saying: “Just think positive” or “It could be worse.”
Instead, say: “That sounds really tough. I’m here for you.”

3. Validate Their Feelings

You don’t have to fully understand what they’re going through to acknowledge that their pain is real. Phrases like “That must be so difficult”, or “You’re not alone” can provide immense comfort.

4. Encourage Professional Help

While your support is valuable, mental health professionals are trained to help. If they’re open to it, encourage them to reach out to a therapist, or support service. Offer to help them find resources or even accompany them to an appointment if they’re nervous.

5. Be Patient & Keep Checking In

Mental health challenges don’t disappear overnight. Keep checking in with a simple text or call:

“Just wanted to see how you’re doing today. No pressure to respond, but I’m here if you want to talk.”

Even if they don’t reply right away, knowing you care can mean the world.

6. Help in Practical Ways

Sometimes, small acts of kindness make a huge impact. Offer to:
  • Go for a walk together
  • Simply sit with them so they’re not alone

These gestures can lighten their load and remind them they’re not in this alone.

7. Take Care of Yourself Too

Supporting someone with mental health struggles can be emotionally draining. It’s okay to set boundaries and seek support for yourself. You can’t pour from an empty cup, so make sure you’re looking after your own wellbeing too.

Your Support Matters

If you’re reading this, it means you care and that alone is powerful. You may not have all the answers, but just being there, listening, and offering kindness can be life-changing for someone in need.

Let’s break the stigma around mental health together one conversation, one act of support, and one moment of kindness at a time.

If you or someone you know is struggling, don’t hesitate to reach out to a professional or a trusted support service. Help is available, and no one has to go through this alone.
