Why are young Australians struggling?

Every day, we’re plugged in. Our phones, laptops, and TVs keep us connected 24/7. We scroll through endless social media posts telling us to hustle harder, be more productive, and do more. But at what cost?

The reality is, young Australians are struggling. In fact, 8.6 Australians die by suicide every single day (ABS, 2022), and many of them are aged between 15 and 24. Mental health challenges are at an all time high, and burnout is becoming more common. But the good news? There are ways to prevent it before it takes over your life.

Recognising the Signs of Burnout

Burnout isn’t just about feeling tired. It’s when stress piles up so much that it starts affecting your daily life. Look out for these signs:

  • Feeling irritable or on edge
  • Trouble sleeping or feeling exhausted all the time
  • Changes in appetite (eating too much or too little)
  • Difficulty focusing (like, brain fog!)
  • Struggling to complete simple everyday tasks

If you notice two or more of these, you might be experiencing burnout. So, what can you do about it?

Simple Ways to Prevent Burnout

Breathe!

Breathwork might sound too simple to be effective, but it can help reduce anxiety and stress. Deep breathing can:

  • Boost your mood
  • Lower your blood pressure
  • Improve focus and memory
  • Help you sleep better
  • Reduce stress levels

Try this: Breathe in for four seconds, hold for four seconds, and breathe out for four seconds. Repeat a few times and notice how your body relaxes.

Get Outside!

Nature is one of the best, free stress relievers out there.

  • Spending time outside can:
  • Improve your mood
  • Boost your health
  • Help you feel more refreshed
  • Give you a dose of vitamin D (Nature’s medicine)

Try going for a walk, catching some waves, or just sitting in the sun for a few minutes. Even a short time outside can make a difference.

Talk to Someone!

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, you don’t have to go through it alone. Talking to a trusted friend, family member, or professional can help more than you think. If you’re not ready to see a doctor, there are free and confidential support services available:

📞 Lifeline – 13 11 14

📞 Beyond Blue – 1300 22 4636

📞 13 Yarn (Support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people) – 13 92 76

Life can feel overwhelming, but burnout and mental stress don’t have to control your life. The ocean has been known to be a powerful stress reliever whether it's the  sound of waves, the ocean breeze, or the calming effect of floating in the water. Surfing, swimming, or simply walking along the shore can help clear your mind and restore your energy. By recognising the signs early and taking small steps to look after yourself, you can build a healthier, happier mindset.
